4th Saturday of each month, 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The Lab at Convergence

(Intersection with Crestwood Drive)

Come to the Songwriter’s Toolbox on the 4th Saturday morning (10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) of each month and learn more about songwriting! Attendance is FREE, although we will pass a “tip jar” around to honor our guest artist for coming. Everyone is welcome, so bring a friend.

Be concise…

As a songwriter, you have approximately three minutes to communicate your idea, engage your audience, make ‘em put away their cell phones, hold ‘em and keep their attention and leave ‘em wanting more. This month’s Toolbox will explore some essential elements of songwriting with a focus on “say what you need to… nothing more.” We’ll discuss some of the “practices” I’ve compiled from hanging out and performing with some fine Texas songwriters. We’ll also conduct some exercises to reinforce the concepts so bring a pad of paper and pen.

The second half of the session we’ll conduct a critique session.

The Songwriter’s Toolbox is like a mini-workshop, which includes learning from our guest artist and then getting constructive feedback for one of your songs. If you don’t have a song to share, you can still learn a lot by listening to a variety of songs written by your fellow songwriters and the suggestions for improving that song. If you’d like to bring a song you're working on or one that's finished, bring your instrument (a piano is available at the Lab) and at least 20 lyric sheets. We encourage everyone to write down their comments on them so that later, you can see your lyric sheets annotated with lots of good suggestions.

Location

The Lab at Convergence is an older red brick building facing Crestwood. The address is 1819 N. Quaker Lane, although 1781 Crestwood Drive pinpoints it in Google Maps.
Directions: Take the Shirlington exit off of I-395 and follow the signs to Quaker Lane. After one stop light, make a left onto Crestwood Drive. The Lab at Convergence is the first building on the left, and there’s a small parking lot to the side, as well as ample street parking. There's also additional parking in the front of the church across the street. All parking is FREE!

Hope to see you there.

Songwriters' Association of Washington is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
