Exciting News! Julie Greene is traveling from Atlanta to join Lea and Larry for another Epic Cheese Night on Saturday August 8th from 8:30 to 11:30 at Epicure Cafe in Fairfax! No cover charge. It's family friendly, and reservations are suggested. We debuted a fiddle/banjo version of "Freebird" with fiddle studen t Holly Rose Weber's help the last time we were there. This time we'll play it with Julie on the piano and Holly as a second fiddler! Plus, it's Johnny or June Carter Cash night and anyone who covers a Cash song during the open mic from 9:30 - 10:30 will get the Big Cheese merch prize package of CD's, t-shirt, hat, and koozies. Maybe Julie will bring her pet, June Carter Cat. The food's great there; we hope you can join us!

Another reason Julie is coming north is that we're going into the studio to record our new song, "Christmas Crocodile". We've assembled a children's choir for the event and will be joined by co-writer Jack Morrison, Larry's 4 year-old ukulele student. We intend to make a novelty record (think Ray Stevens and "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer").

Previously, I had completed a YouTube Tutorial Series called How To Promote Your Music With Video on The Internet: A Shoestring Approach. (I know, too long a title). I've just started a new tutorial series called Promoting Your Creative Passion. The differences are: each tutorial is very much shorter (normally 5-7 minutes long), more focused on one topic, covering not just using video to promote your creative passion, but other promotional areas, and targeted not just to musicians and songwriters, but all the creative arts. As part of this, I also want to do Skype interviews with people that have talents in promotion, that they can share. If you're someone like that, let me know. Link: Promoting Your Creative Passion

I also continue my internet TV program The Performing Songwriter

    Thanks

Dear SAW Members ... How can I get the word out for the next SAW Serves event on Saturday, July 18, 2015 at Embry Rucker Community Center in Reston, VA.

     The details are as follows.

     From Howard Goldberg:

Hello SAW members! SAW Serves is a charitable and noble vision within the Songwriters Association of Washington (SAW) community and organization.

The goal of SAW Serves is to feed, entertain and encourage people in homeless communities. After Ricardo White’s dedicated and “second to none” volunteer work and after his untimely passing on December 25, 2014. I am honored to continue this as a SAW member.

The next SAW Serves event is Saturday, July 18, 2015 at Embry Rucker Community Center located at 11975 Bowman Towne Drive, Reston, VA 20190. Embry Rucker Community Center is homeless shelter that fills a need within the Reston community and has allowed SAW Serves to be a part of the “giving and sharing experience”.

We are in need of volunteers for the following event:

    Where:

Embry Rucker Community Center - 11975 Bowman Towne Drive, Reston, VA 20190

    When:

    Saturday, July 18, 2015

    Background:

The shelter has a large kitchen with a cafeteria-style layout. There is a large warmer to keep food that was prepared beforehand hot before dinner starts. There is a large freezer, large sinks, and a cafeteria-style serving area and eating area. The “clients” range from families who live at the shelter to single men and women of all ages who arrive only for a meal. The shelter estimates there will be about 100 hungry souls to feed.

There is a cozy performing space in front of the cafeteria eating area for performers.

I will NEED a PA system.

    Event Details:

2:30 PM: SAW Serves volunteers will start arriving with food and help set up in the kitchen. There is an onsite nutritionist who orchestrates and oversees the setup, menu, serving the clients, and clean up. There is room for 6 people to help at same time in the kitchen. Alternates are welcome to give others a break. Also, volunteers can attend to the needs of the clients in the dining area by pouring drinks and sharing conversations and time.

4:30 PM: Serving the dinner starts. The clients will form a single line, get plates, napkins, dining utensils, and then proceed in front of the cafeteria-style serving area (similar to a small school lunch serving setup). SAW volunteers will serve dinner to the clients. There is a seating area for the walk-ins and a separate seating area for families.

6:30 PM: Dinner clean-up begins. Volunteers will collect and hand-wash all dinnerware, mop floors, wash off tables and put everything away in the proper place.

6:30 PM: Entertainment from volunteers begins. Hopefully we can have the PA ready to go at 6:30 PM by starting the PA setup around 6:00 PM. Volunteer performers are needed.

8:30 PM: FINAL clean-up and walk through to make sure we leave Embry Ricker Community Center the same as it was when we arrived.

Menu – Prepared and/or Donated By SAW volunteers:

    Main Course:

4 Spaghetti and meat sauce trays. The tin tray size should be (Info coming soon)

1 Spaghetti and marina sauce tray (for vegetarians). The tin tray size should be (Info coming soon)

    Mixed Vegetables:

    Enough to feed 100 people

    Spinach:

    Enough to feed 60 people

    Bread:

    Enough to feed 100 people

    Beverages:

    • Milk is a MUST. There are children and Virginia nutrition regulations require milk (regular milk and 1% milk). Single serve milk cartons are best.

    • Fruit punch and/or other flavored punch drinks.

    • Soda was specifically requested by Susan Alger, lead coordinator at the shelter. Cans or 2 liters are okay. We will need ice or be able to keep the cans cold.

If 2 liters sodas or 2 liter fruit punch drinks are provided, we can either have pre-poured cups ready to serve when the clients pick up their dinner or we can pour the beverages at the dinner tables.

    Dessert:

Another special request form the shelter is ice cream with chocolate and caramel syrup AND JIMMIES!

Cookies, Muffins, Cakes, etc. (the shelter has some sweets but donations are welcome)

NOTE: Please keep in mind that ALL foods should be soft as there are clients that may not have the best capacity for chewing.

Address any questions to: Howard Goldberg at 1959hjg@gmail.com. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

    Sincerely,

    Howard Goldberg

Hi all ... I have music coming out of my ears! Seriously, I have more music (mostly guitar arrangements) that I can keep up with. Currently, I have about a dozen tunes that are in various stages of progress. I'd love to collaborate with a lyricist/musician/arranger. If you are interested, contact me by email and I'll send you some snippets of what I'm working on.  Thanks, Bill

I am hosting an acoustic guitar workshop and house concert a week from this Saturday on May 9th.

Jeffrey Pepper Rogers is the instructor and performer.  He is the founding editor of Acoustic Guitar Magazine, was the 2008 winner of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest and he has done a couple of instructional DVDs for Homespun tapes on Acoustic Arrangements for classic Dead Songs.

The workshop is  from 2- 3:30 in the day, the topic is Grateful Dead for Acoustic Guitar and the cost is $25. (all proceeds to the artist)

Jeffrey will be joined by Wendy Ramsay for a House concert at 8pm., suggested donation of 10-15 dollars for the artists. If you come to the workshop you are more than welcome to hang out and jam until the concert. We will be providing complimentary food and refreshments throughout the day.

We live in Rockville, off Norbeck near the Manor Country Club.

Please feel free to invite others.

Thanks, let me know if you can make it, i will give you the address, or if you have any questions,
