Joel Pomerantz Memorial Gathering
Friday July 30th at The Seekers Church (next to The Electric Maid in Takoma Park) from 6pm -10pm.
Please join us for a celebration and remembrance of Joel Pomerantz.
The area music scene has lost a real champion with the passing of Joel Pomerantz. We are holding a gathering to remember, celebrate, cherish and connect with our loss. And with each other.
Joel was the coarse thread that tied together so many disparate music scenes and musicians. It is only fitting that we come together to share witness to the breadth and depth and audacity of his influence and outreach. Connecting people and organizations and scenes was Joel’s strong suit, always.
We will hold a 4 hour gathering at The Seekers Church. We are hoping to hear some words from some of those who knew Joel best. We have asked some of his close friends to perform a few of Joel’s own songs. And there is always the danger of a song circle breaking out.
We want to remember and to express the value we all feel from his singular life. In the face of too many challenges, Joel was always eagerly striving to make and then share connections. He was matter of fact about his poverty, his afflictions and his social deficits. And he could be difficult to guide through social situations. And yet these were always superseded by his passion to find and support the next great musician, group or scene.
Mostly we want to kick off a process to keep and grow our connection to each other. It is the legacy he has left and the one he would most want to carry on.
There will be food and beverages. There will be stories and songs. There will be time to meet and talk to people who knew Joel in ways different than you. There will be too many “Joel Stories”
We hope to have a plan for doing something annually in his honor by then. And may first announce that at this meeting.
We are asking those who will attend to register through saw.org, so we can plan. While attendance is free, like Joel, we will accept donations to this effort (online HERE or by mail or at the event). Any extra money that accumulates will be given to the Joel Pomerantz memorial effort that is formed. As plans develop, we will continue to communicate.
