I received this series of 4 articles from Focusrite written by Chuck Fishman; it's well thought out and full of good advice.

The best advice from Part 2: "first protect your songs by registering them with the US copyright office." In the article, Chuck goes further into explaining why copyrighting your work is such good sense.
