Dear SAW Members ... How can I get the word out for the next SAW Serves event on Saturday, July 18, 2015 at Embry Rucker Community Center in Reston, VA.
The details are as follows.
From Howard Goldberg:
Hello SAW members! SAW Serves is a charitable and noble vision within the Songwriters Association of Washington (SAW) community and organization.
The goal of SAW Serves is to feed, entertain and encourage people in homeless communities. After Ricardo White’s dedicated and “second to none” volunteer work and after his untimely passing on December 25, 2014. I am honored to continue this as a SAW member.
The next SAW Serves event is Saturday, July 18, 2015 at Embry Rucker Community Center located at 11975 Bowman Towne Drive, Reston, VA 20190. Embry Rucker Community Center is homeless shelter that fills a need within the Reston community and has allowed SAW Serves to be a part of the “giving and sharing experience”.
We are in need of volunteers for the following event:
Where:
Embry Rucker Community Center - 11975 Bowman Towne Drive, Reston, VA 20190
When:
Saturday, July 18, 2015
Background:
The shelter has a large kitchen with a cafeteria-style layout. There is a large warmer to keep food that was prepared beforehand hot before dinner starts. There is a large freezer, large sinks, and a cafeteria-style serving area and eating area. The “clients” range from families who live at the shelter to single men and women of all ages who arrive only for a meal. The shelter estimates there will be about 100 hungry souls to feed.
There is a cozy performing space in front of the cafeteria eating area for performers.
I will NEED a PA system.
Event Details:
2:30 PM: SAW Serves volunteers will start arriving with food and help set up in the kitchen. There is an onsite nutritionist who orchestrates and oversees the setup, menu, serving the clients, and clean up. There is room for 6 people to help at same time in the kitchen. Alternates are welcome to give others a break. Also, volunteers can attend to the needs of the clients in the dining area by pouring drinks and sharing conversations and time.
4:30 PM: Serving the dinner starts. The clients will form a single line, get plates, napkins, dining utensils, and then proceed in front of the cafeteria-style serving area (similar to a small school lunch serving setup). SAW volunteers will serve dinner to the clients. There is a seating area for the walk-ins and a separate seating area for families.
6:30 PM: Dinner clean-up begins. Volunteers will collect and hand-wash all dinnerware, mop floors, wash off tables and put everything away in the proper place.
6:30 PM: Entertainment from volunteers begins. Hopefully we can have the PA ready to go at 6:30 PM by starting the PA setup around 6:00 PM. Volunteer performers are needed.
8:30 PM: FINAL clean-up and walk through to make sure we leave Embry Ricker Community Center the same as it was when we arrived.

Beverages:
• Milk is a MUST. There are children and Virginia nutrition regulations require milk (regular milk and 1% milk). Single serve milk cartons are best.
• Fruit punch and/or other flavored punch drinks.
• Soda was specifically requested by Susan Alger, lead coordinator at the shelter. Cans or 2 liters are okay. We will need ice or be able to keep the cans cold.
If 2 liters sodas or 2 liter fruit punch drinks are provided, we can either have pre-poured cups ready to serve when the clients pick up their dinner or we can pour the beverages at the dinner tables.
Dessert:
Another special request form the shelter is ice cream with chocolate and caramel syrup AND JIMMIES!
Cookies, Muffins, Cakes, etc. (the shelter has some sweets but donations are welcome)
NOTE: Please keep in mind that ALL foods should be soft as there are clients that may not have the best capacity for chewing.
